I have an old Swedish Mauser that shoots really well and I wanted to install a scope on it but first I have to replace the horizontal bolt handle with one that is bent to clear the scope. What's the best way to make a clean straight cut of the bolt handle and reattach the new handle? Can I use my mig welder to attach the new bolt handle?
You can't cut and reatach the bolt handle however if you check here at www.brownells.com they might have a jig where you can carefully heat and bend it.You can also go here www.e-GunParts.com and see if they have one already bent.
The problem with heating or welding bits of firearms is that the heat used can make the metal brittle. Not a good thing for firearms that must withstand very great shockwaves every time they go bang. So even if you find the jig of jigs, to allow bending, NORMALIZE the work prior to using the firearm. If the links already provided do not offer a solution, then it is possible to cut off the handle, and manufacture another one, provided you have access to a TIG welder, and the expertise to use it properly. Another option you may wish to consider is a different kind of scope mount. There are custom style mounts that can place a scope out of the way of the bolt handle, by either raising it, or placing it above and to the side somewhat.

I think your best bet would to replace the bolt with a bent one. If you want to keep it in original specs, do as theologian said and try and find a diff scope mount.
Hello,
I have an old 8mm Mauser that I ran into the same problem with. I bought a sidemount scope mount through a person in Shotgun News that deals in these old weapons. If I recall right he was selling Bolt assemblies for 7mm that had the handle prebent. If he is still around I would go with one of thoses. That way all you would really have to do is install the new bolt and get Your headspace checked. The side mount scope on my 8mm is alright but I find it gets in the way just about everytime. Another company I saw had a mount that replace the top forearm on them and used a long eye relief scope. It has been a year and a half since I messed with my weapons but I would just surf through shotgun news and see what You can find. Take care.
