How hard is it to remove grout in a shower without removing the tiles?
my dad said he would rather tear down the whole shower and start over than clean out old grout. I've looked at a variety of grout removal tools as well as stain removal methods. I'm trying to remove stains from plain white grout in a shower. what's the best plan?
thanks

EDIT: I know you can't put new grout over old but why?
If you want to remove the old grout and the joints are not too skinny, you can get a little "grout saw" at any one of the home improvement stores. It's basically just a little handle that accepts an abrasive "blade" that you saw back and forth to reduce the old grout to dust. It's a lot of work, but does the job well.
Be careful not to rub it across the tile - it will scratch it up in short order.
New grout simply will not stick to old - not even worth a try.
If you have a Rotozip tool they have an attachment to remove grout also. But my question is what size tile are you dealing with? If its the little 1x1 or 2x2 squares I would rather remove it all and replace it. If dealing with the larger tile its not to bad, but be carefull because there might be some loose tiles depending on age and how well it was done.
