It's regional. In most places, the gap has closed a lot. In some place, like where I live in central CO, diesel has been cheaper for quite a while. Diesel is around $1.90/gal and regular gasoline is generally around $0.30/gal more expensive. Buy from a reputable brand and use an additive with lubricity enhancer (cetane and the other stuff doesn't matter).
Here in SE Wisconsin, diesel is around $2.09 - $2.29 or about the same as mid-grade gas. I like gasbuddy.com to see fuel costs where I am or where I'm going. You don't need to join to use the on line maps.
Just filled up here in south Florida at BJs for $2.15/gallon. Regular unleaded was $1.99/gal. Normally wouldn’t use a BJs but the city signed a contract with them and fill all the city trucks there so it’s always fresh diesel.
The cheapest around San Antonio, that I've seen anyway, is Murphy USA at Walmart. Gas is $1.73 and diesel is $1.88. Diesel around here is always higher and I still have nightmares about the diesel price around 2007 at a!most $5 a gallon.
I hadn't heard about consideration of lowering sulphur further. The UL sulphur is bad enough that I used additives for my diesels. The environmental powers want diesel gone, just like they're slowly killing coa. And between sulphur removal and gobs of sensitive, expensive emissions garbage, they're making headway. I wonder how long before truck choices are gasoline and natural gas?

+1 for Gasbuddy app. Great to plan longer trips, too.
around me in PA prior to the pandemic hit diesel avg .50-.75 more then 87. since the pandemic and fuel demand seems down diesel now averages about .12-.20 more then 87. prices will swing again with OPEC trying to push out US competition again.
I usually fill up at a truck stop close to my home. They have the best prices on diesel and with my EFS discount card, it really cuts the cost on a 60 gallon tank.
No Costco gas in Mass
locally it's from $1.97 at el-cheapo places to $2.05 at shell (not right off highway) to $2.30 which is too high as people will go to cheaper places.
I noticed Salem NH ru s about $2.20 give or take
