Okay, I went and looked at my son's truck. I see the same plug as yours.

Here is what I think is going on with a factory wiring set up with what I can see and by looking at the wiring diagram in my manual. (I can't get a good look or my phone in there)

Both wires as far as I can tell end up the the main harness behind the instrument cluster. (The big wrap)

Here is my description as the Blue/Red comes from the light switch (white pencil)
From switch to fuse panel
From fuse panel it splits (yellow pencil)to instrument bulbs (red pen) and to gauge cluster plug (purple pen cap)
If you notice the instrument cluster connector has a ground. I think the black (from your plug) is not shown and must serve as a ground for the bulb.

I think I remember reading somewhere that some aftermarket wiring kits require a gm style light switch.

The first step might be to get the Blue/Red connected to the headlight switch. So the back light will come on when the **** is pulled out. Like others have said the black has to be a ground since the socket itself does not ground on any metal.

PS: Please send me $5.00 for my high tech wiring diagram markers.

lol I’ll get that money to you by snail mail.

But thank you. Ok it’s starting to come together. And yes I agree that the black wire should be a ground since the light socket does not ground to well in the plastic housing. I’ll have to blow it up on the pc tomorrow to be able to see the wiring with your pencils.

Nice job by the way and thank you for helping!!

I hope you get it working. I have learned many things from others on here and hope to pass it along.

Where did you connect the black wire? it should be connected to ground. The factory harness grounds on the bracket behind the dash.

as I previously stated, you are reading voltage across the bulb filament if you are trying to measure voltage "coming out" of the bulb pigtail.

Not to be a smart alec, but here. Blue circle. You should have a corresponding plug up in there. Make sure it is the correct one. The only other 2 wire up in there that I can think of is the radio? I do not know if there is a size difference in them. Maybe that is the issue? Maybe you have a issue with the "universal harness" wiring being not so universal.

Green is for radio, black is for your light, you can see it to the right in the pic.

So every time I touch that black to a ground it pops the fuse. I think I’ll pull that pigtail out completely and connect it up to the battery and see if what the heck is going on. Back to basics.

So I pulled the pigtail out and connected it to the battery and it works fine. I stuck it back in and connected it to the headlight switch and its working. So I'm good to go.
Wish I knew why it did what it did before
