Recently got a 93 ranger with 3.0 v6. Upon starting it misses for about 30 seconds then will smooth out. It has stalled a few times when engine is cold. I replace the IAC but this did not fix my problem. The engine seems to be over fueled at cold start. Can a fuel injector leak gas into the intake? Is there a check valve in the system that keeps pressure to the injectors. Just looking for suggestions before throwing more money in new parts. FYI the engine is a Ford rebuilt engine with about 14K miles on it. The truck had set for about 3 years with a bad trans. I had the trans rebuilt and it works fine . Thanks in advance for suggestions.
since it sat it could have some clogged injectors. Need to run some cleaner thru it and see what happens. did youinatall new fuel filter in it to get it running, that would be 1st place to look. Also check coil pack and wires.
Fuel system pressure bleed down while sitting is very easy to test for, takes <1min. With this in mind, this basic diagnostic item should be high on the list. You didn't mention if it's consuming coolant but if so, make a note of this. You can move replacement of the fuel filter to the bottom of (off) the list as your problem description/symptoms don't point towards this being the cause.
Check if the oil smells like gas, if it does a leaking injector is a very good possibility. Also remove and inspect all the spark plugs, they should be relatively clean with a tan brown color on the electrode, if you find one that is black and sooty that cylinders injector is the prime suspect.
Thanks Paul, I will pull the plugs, I have new ones to install anyway. I have noticed my oil pressure seems lower than when I first got my truck so that could be from gasoline dilution. I have checked the oil level but have not given it the sniff test!
* Don't need a gauge to determine if fuel system pressure is bleeding down when it's not running, you can simply use the age old, cycle the key to run (but don't start) a few times (4X for good measure), then start it. How it responds will answer the question.
* Unless you have installed an aftermarket oil pressure gauge or modified the OEM one (there is a way), that gauge does noting more than point to midrange when there like, 5PSI or more of oil pressure. It's nothing more than a mechanical idiot light revealing to the driver a go or no-go for oil pressure..
