Automatic Shifter
I have a 2019 Ford F-350 , and just noticed that the automatic shifter (column shifter) moves back and fourth. I searched the forum and manual and couldn’t find anything. My question is what’s the purpose if any, if it locked in either position it would makes sense but it doesn’t do that.

The only position you would consider it "locked" is Park, which requires you to step on the brake to move the shifter. All other positions can be operator selected without any interventions. I don't understand what does or doesn't make sense to you, but automatic shifters have used this strategy since just about forever. Maybe I'm not understanding your question. Don't know.

You need to pull towards you then down to move from park - it acts as an interlock so if the column were inadvertently bumped it would not end up in gear.
