Hard start

I have a 99 F350, 6spd, 7.3 I bought this truck back in the spring. It has been starting and running just fine until it didn't. It had set inside pole barn for about a week and then it did not want to start. I had to use starting fluid to get it up to my shop.
I have messed around with it for last 2 days and now I am running out of time I need to get it going. It is warm or hot weather here in South Illinois but I plugged it in last nite inside garage and this morning it had to turn over for a long time but it did start. It has started a cpl of times today but not after the engine cooled down. Every time it has to turn over way too long to fire off. I put a new GPR on it because the old one was bad, a new fuel filter, and I can see the tach moving up when its cranking over. I have used starting fluid a cpl of times and it will start and run fine then. The HPOP has oil in it.
My question is what will keep it from starting but let it run fine once it does start?

Thanks RB

Hey RB, STOP using starting fluid the GP’s will ignite it and you’ll have a serious no start issue.

How many miles on the truck?
Original injectors?
How old are the batteries? Put a charger on them overnight. If the glow plugs are working they will seriously stress the batteries!
Have you had the batteries actually load tested?
Is the fuel bowl heater still plugged into the fuel bowl?
‘What is your fuel pressure?
Do you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key on?
How long are you waiting AFTER the WTS light goes out?
Do the glow plugs work?
What is the oil level on the dipstick?
How much fuel in the tank?

These questions will help eliminate issues or point to them...

275k miles
I would think original injectors
Batteries are fairly new put in before I bought truck
Batteries have been load tested and they stay on maintainer
I put a new starter on and it spins fast
fuel bowl heater I don't know is that important in 80 degree weather?
I don't know to check fuel pressure
I thought the fuel pump was mechanical
I have cycled the the key several times it makes no difference
I don't think the glow plugs are working but not sure. Are they needed in hot weather?
Oil is full
Fuel is fuel
The truck was running fine it was setting when it decided to not start. It had not been started in a week and now it don't.

Thanks RB

2x no ether. Ours have electric fuel pumps that sit under the driver's seat inside the frame and you should hear it run for about 20 seconds every time you turn the key on. Fuel bowl heaters aren't needed but sometimes they go bad and short out and prevent the trucks from running. If that was the culprit I would expect it to never run for you but I suppose it could be intermittent. There is a drain valve on the rear of the fuel bowl that just flips from one side to the other to open. The drain tube runs down the front of the block on the passenger's side (if it's still hooked up) and you can slide a piece of hose over it to extend it and catch the fuel. you can set up a container, open that valve and check fuel flow. GP's activate in all weather but for less time in summer. Have you tried plugging the block heater in to see if that helps? And lastly, do you get ANY smoke while cranking and no start? There is a link in my signature that has a great no-start trouble shooting procedure. You have to scroll down a bit to get to the 7.3 section.

Yes I did plug it in and it did start but it had to crank a LONG time to start.
I am going to try the fuel flow
Can I just unplug or take a fuse out for the fuel heater?

Thanks again RB

Ok so I plugged truck in last night and just now I turned on the key and I could here and feel fuel pump running, also I watched volt gauge and dome light after about 20 seconds or so the light got brighter and the volt gauge jumped up so I would guess maybe the glow plugs are working.

When I cranked it over the truck did start, It cranked a little longer than I thought it should given the fact that it had been plugged in and the temp on the fuel bowl and HPOP were around 120 degrees. The temp in shop about 75.

I guess now I will wait ill it cools down some to see if it will start then

Here's the glow plug time chart so you can see how long they should activate based on temps.

When the truck cranks over for about 10-15 seconds there is no white smoke at all..
what turns the fuel on or what sensor allows fuel to flow to the injectors?

Thanks RB

The injector driver module (IDM), which is mounted under the driver's side fender liner up near the firewall commands the injectors to fire when all of the required conditions are met. I do not know what all of the conditions are but one of them is voltage and I can't even remember what that is. I do believe that 10V is enough and it might even be lower. I seem to recall seeing mine start down into the 9's on my voltage meter.

Well here is where I am on my truck now. I quit working on it for a while and went back out I tried it and it started. I tried it several times throughout the afternoon and it started every time it does crank a little longer than I would like but it starts and runs fine.
So I guess until it quits again I will just wonder what was going on.
Thanks for all the help
