I have a 04 6.0 cc swb 4x4. The only modifications to the truck are a sct running spartan tunes. Oil is changed every 5k and was changed thursday. Fuel filters are changed at around 15k intervals and were changed sunday. Now to the problem. I went to get in the truck and go eat lunch yester day and afte the glow plug light went off I tried to turn the truck on and it would stumble but not fully start. After probably 3-10 minutes of trying to get it to start it finally started but was running extremely rough and wouldn't go above 1000rpms and was. Pouring black smoke like crazy..... It did this for a minute or less then started running like normal. The rest of the day truck started very easy no issue. Then this morning truck didn't want to start again. When I checked for dtc with the sct it said there were none. I'm not driving the truck today and I'm stuck at the hospital.... Does anyone have a direction to shoot me to resolve the hard start problem?
I think you ought to pull the fuel filter and reinsert it again. Sounds like you are introducing air into the system. If it started fine BEFORE you did the filter change and now it doesn't, I'd start there. Try this first...let it sit overnight and before you attempt to start it, turn key on the to start position (But not to crank position). Leave on for 10-15 sec. Turn off..... Do this 3 times. On 4th turn on, attempt to start the truck. Report what happens.
It was doing this pre fuel filter change. It started yesterday and after getting it started yesterday I had no issues... When I changed the fuel filters I cycled it 3-4 times as u said then it fired right up. All day after the initial time I started it would crank quickly. This am again hard to start
How old are your batteries, mine did the same thing, turnover good, hard to start, I would load test batteries, or if your in a pinch charge are boost the trucks batteries.
Batteries are new bought 2 new 1000cca batteries in january along with a new altenator. btw this is a early 04 built 10/03 so I'm thinking not a stc fitting problem but it might be a fuel issue.... Ill pull the top fuel filter housing cap to check for fuel... If there is fuel in the bowl..... Maybe a the hpop is not getting the oil pres. To 500psi to fire?
if it's pouring black smoke it sounds like your'e getting plenty of fuel.maybe youv'e got a couple glow plugs that aint doing there thing when cold. check the single wire on the pass. side battery that powers the gpcm. it's on the positive cable.if its loose the glow plugs wont heat, i know this from experience.also try plugging it in overnight and see if that helps. if it does look to the glow plugs.
K I don't think mine has a block heater but ill check for the glow plugs... Fuel was in the upper bowl but the upper fuel filter cap was cracked so ill replace that and see where I'm at.... It is probably 60-70 in the am time here temp wise
