Gas thieves!

I had the joy of finding my van gas door and cap hanging open when I left for work yesterday.
The thief managed to leave with about 1/4 tank and I don't think they left any surprises in the fuel since the van ran fine.

I found a few locking gas caps like the Stant 10502 but I was wondering if there were any other creative solutions.
I've seen a few trucks with locking gas doors but there don't seem to be any for the van.

I am concerned that if they decided to hit my van again and the cap is locked, they may just drill a hole in the tank or something else stupid...

I thought the later models had a guard at the bottom to prevent this? I know my '99 expedition does. Like a swiss cheese plate right at the end of the filler neck. I had a locking cap on my '99. I've had it since gas sky rocketed years ago and lost it the other day...You big dummy...

I didn't see any such plate when I was in there replacing the fuel pump last year, but I wasn't looking for that.
There was what looked like a cloth mesh sock on the end of the neck to strain large debris.

UPDATE

I wasn't able to confirm if there is a plate blocking the fill neck, 8 MPG on the next fill up confirmed there was some fuel taken.

I ended up going with a Stant locking gas cap part # 10502 and it seems like it will do the trick.

This cap seems to fit tighter than my factory cap. About the 3rd time I used it I felt the click before it was actually tight, causing a fuel smell in the cab.

Now I make sure to push it down and feel the click a few times.

Having to deal with a lock isn't my ideal solution but I couldn't think of any clever ideas.
