Alright i got a 1988 4x4 2.9 Ranger with 105k original miles yesterday and its stuck in reverse (A4LD) Looked underneath to see a small puddle of ATF..So ive never repaired or actually had a automatic truck before..So what all needs replaced when i take the transmission out? Do i replace the torque converter? Also how much of a pain is it to rebuild these transmissions? I figured either rebuild this one or just shop at the junk yards for one that works..so far i got nothing into this truck. Rest of it is in good condition the engine needs gaskets and basic maintance because its been on a farm since 1988.
Alright pans off an filter removed...filter was horrible looking with chunks but rest of fluid was just brown..so what do I look for now on lost forward gears?

Very difficult to find good used A4LD. Rebuilts start at $1200 and up. I finally found a core for $475 delivered. Will install in my 93 Ranger and then put the original trans on a stainless bench along with all the repair manuals I have collected (ATSG is good) and then take a few months to rebuild mine, propery. I just don't trust anyone else rebuilding an auto trans. Too complex and most mechanics simply won't take their time and do the job right... cuz time is money. All the techs I spoke with have derogatory comments about the design of this A4LD, e.g. LD stands for 'light duty'. Several TSBs to consider implementing. Good luck.
Yeah called around quotes start at 3500$ for a rebuild with i re install...NO one wants that job so im looking for a C5 to hold me over until i get a 302 and 4 spd matching set built up.
Last winter I bought a rebuilt A5LD from Transmission Depot Inc in Hudson, FL and it's been perfect since January. The price was under $1500 with no core charge. I picked it up because we have a winter home near there. I had a local shop install it because I don't have a garage or enough tools there to do the job. It was under $400 for the install.
