Will bad torque converter work in reverse?

Just a quick question here. I rebuilt the engine on my 79 150, I've had transmission problems ever since, but the tranny was perfect before the rebuild, and I didn't separate the block and trans, did the rebuild with the engine in.
I've asked around for what the problem might be, and a torque converter that was weak and failed due to the trucks new extra power has been suggested as the problem a few times.
I got the idea a few days ago though to just do a quick test in reverse, and when I put the truck in reverse and hit the gas, it dropped right into gear perfectly and took off.
My question is, if my torque converter has partially failed, wouldn't reverse be just as weak as all my other gears?
Thanks, AleX

It sounds farther back than the TC based on my experience. I think your thinking is correct.

Right. It's not like the converter is spinning in reverse when the transmission is. It's spinning exactly the same way as it always does, but if it's not the converter then I have no idea what the problem could be, again.
The tranny was perfect before the rebuild, and now none of my forward gears will engage solidly.

Did you pull the transmission pan and replace the filter when you did the engine work? Did it have much clutch mud in the bottom of the pan?

It could be a valve body issue I guess.

If you did not keep it level the entire time you could have some junk (the mud that normally forms in any transmission) but I doubt that is the case. Let us know what you learn.

I didn't pull the pan, but I did talk to a guy who's worked on alot more cars than me and he came over and looked everything over, and he thinks the whole transmission may just hav failed with the added power.
I really juiced up the engine, I went from an absolutely stock late 70's 400 with maybe 180 hp since I had headers and a nice exhaust on it, to an almost completely built up 400 power plant with from what I've heard from people over 350 horse.
The guy I talked to thinks it could have just torn the old tranny apart, so I may pull the whole thing. I'll be on here asking plenty of questions I'm sure though, so it'll be clear pretty soon what I've decided to do.
Thanks for the help though, AleX

In that case clearly you are going to get a 500 HP rated transmission if you are going to be doing WOT stuff.

Everything and everyone as a weak link.

I know a guy who put a V-8 in a 40's Willis (sp) and I asked him what it would do when he went to WOT. He said "rip out the rear end" and after taking a long time to find a replacement part he has never did the WOT thing again.
