I recently had the torque converter go out on my c4. It was working fine before that. After i put a torque converter in(2k stall) it wouldn't shift into 3rd or automatically at all. Then after driving it some it started shifting just fine. But all of a sudden it wont shift again. It shifts good into 1st and 2nd manually but 3rd or automatic it wont shift at all. It just acts like its in 1st but slips really bad. Ive checked all vac lines put clamps on every connection put new modulator in along with its pin. Supposedly this trans was rebuilt not very many miles ago. What could be the issue. Is there something where the shift linkage goes in the trans that i could have put on wrong from pulling the trans?
I also suspect trans i just wanted to mention that i had replaced torque converter incase that could have caused a issue. Hoping its something simple just dont know what. I refilled with type f fluid and fluid is at correct level.
So you replaced a bad torque converter with a new one? Thats normally a bad idea, if a TC fails a full rebuild and new TC is the only sure path of correction. It sounds like a full rebuild and another torque converter are in order.
Or at least pull the valvebody and converter and have the new converter flushed out by a transmission shop. There's likely debris in the transmission randomly sticking valves in the valvebody and/or checkballs up. That would explain the sudden appearance and disappearance of symptoms. You might find the transmission is fine once it's flushed out.

Sounds like debris in the valve body making the pistons stick in their bores. While cleaning valve body is simple and can be done in the truck, it will likely get stuck again. If something in the trans is continuing to make shavings (like a thrust bearing) only a full removal and disassembly will solve. been there, did that multiple times. Also need a new cooler/radiator if it is contaminated.
