I have a 93 flareside with a 5.0 and e40d trans. I had mine rebuild. Was fine but shifted hard in the into 2nd at times. Eventually it stopped moving in first it went but extremely slow so I'd have to put it in 2nd get up to speed then shift back up. Now thinking it was the trans I had a friend take his out and sell it to me with a shift kit in it. Same exact trans. Replaced it and it's now having the same issues. Torque converter was replaced when I had mine rebuilt about 2 months ago or a little over. What could this be something electrical?
high gear starts in the D position means the trans solenoids are not getting power.replacing the trans itself wont cure the problem unless you got lucky and the issue was the solenoid pack but of course that's much cheaper and easier to change than a whole trans.
manually selecting 1 or 2 without power to the trans will both = 2nd gear.this is why your able to take off ok while manually shifting and then shift into D once rolling.
restore power to the trans, and your problem will be gone.
