Transfer case question...

OK, I have a 1982 Jeep Wagoneer transfer case. The tag says "208 AM" It appears to be a version of the NP-208 that was commonly used in Ford trucks. The main difference is the AM t-case has a fixed yoke on the back, and the input shaft has 23 spilnes to 31 for the NP-208. I'm putting a 5.0 , C-6 and this 208 AM into my Jeep if I can change the input shaft to the 31 spline from the NP-208. That way it will fit the C-6 and I'll have a fixed yoke. My question is, does anybody know if the input shafts are the same, other than spline count. The outside diameter is the same. The only difference appears to be the spline count.
