I've got a 4 wire alternator on my '66 352. It's chrome so it ain't stock I know. Is the 4 wire the stock the OEM wiring?
I want to replace the chrome pulley on it. Has a new belt that's a month or so old. It's tight tight and aligned properly. It squeals and want to replace the chrome pulley with a steel black or whatever equivalent.
Worse case if I have to replace the alternator a 4 wire if OEM should drop in I assume?
Stock alternator is 4 wire, yes. I think you are on the right track, chrome is slippy. Many aftermarket alternators nowadays come with no pulley and need to use yours so if yo go that route, make sure it comes with a pulley.
Is it a Powermaster brand alternator? One problem with the FE engine where the alternator is mounted high on the passenger side is there is very little room and most non stock replacements will hit the head. The Powermaster puts out a steady 50-60 amps at idle and fits just like the original. Unfortunately, they only sale it in a chrome finish which ups the $ unnecessarily. I have seen a post here where you can by a bracket system that puts the alternator low on the passenger side - this removes the issue of head clearance.
