So, I've got the engine FINALLY dialed in and took my '62 that was converted to a 4x4 sometime in it's life on it's maiden drive yesterday, and this thing seems to shake from side to side. It's bizarre, because, admittedly the shocks need to be replaced, but the tires and wheels are all looking good, and there isn't a lot of play in the body when it's parked. But when I drive it down the block, it shimmies BAD!
I am hoping there is an simple problem I am overlooking - everything is tight and looks good, so I am not sure why it is wobbly...
Bent axle shaft, bent hub, unbalanced tires, plus everything mentioned above. I agree with putting all four wheels in the air and put in in 4 wheel drive, see what doesn't look cool. Please use good jack stands or a hoist.
Thanks for feedback - it makes sense that those items would definitely cause it, and I’m not sure any of this was maintained in the vehicle before I got it, so I’ll follow this advice!
Wobble at all speeds from take off, or at certain speeds? If the truck has sat a long time, could be the tires are flat spotted. I've seen bent rims, loose lug nuts, tires with tread separation, ect...
Yeah - I think after looking at this list, I've decided to whittle it down one at a time... it's now at the transmission shop (the C6 is leaking and being a pain), and I'm having them check out the driveshaft and differential. While it's there, I definitely don't trust the wheels (I found 5 lug nuts missing from the 4 wheels), so I am going to find some new wheels and tires...process of elimination.... wish me luck! I'll definitely post when I discover what the underlying problem is.
