How is it that your 1995 F150 has an engine last seen in 1974 with a transmission last produced in 1981?
On a C4, hard shifts can be caused by the modulator not being connected to a vacuum source. Do you have a vacuum line from the carb down to the passenger side of the transmission? Modulator looks like so:
