Well I think I finally had the wonderful experience of one of the boots popping off.
I haven’t checked it yet with a boost leak test, but I was playing around with one of my more extreme tunes and under hard acceleration I had a really loud pop. I have to concur with what has been described here. Definitely an oh 💩 what was that moment..
what’s the most common ones to have problems and situations like that? Obviously check them all, but for sake of argument...
Before I added the Riff Raff plenum inserts the lower boots to the intakes were the ones I had the most trouble with. Had to make sure they were extra clean and oil free or BLAMO
It did sound like the center so I bet that is it. Sucks having to go to work when your baby is injured 😂. Pretty sure I don’t dote on my kids like this... wait. I KNOW I don’t. ☺️.
I put the inserts and RR boots in last year when doing uppipes. The one thing I messed up was I ordered the wrong size t clamps so had to use the stock ones. Bet that is the culprit.
The spider to plenum boots will sound like letting air out of a balloon at around 4-5 pounds of boost. Mine hit a wall @ 5# and wouldn't build above that unless I floored it, even then it was just a quick spike in boost. Original worm clamps don't even compare to Tbolt clamps
Well. I tried for some time and found no other leak except a strong one at the green vac hose. Spider was good surprisingly.
Can’t explain the pop but she is working well now.
If you had a boot pop off or break loose, you would know it. Performance would be WAAAAAY down.
This picture below is of me fixing a boot popping off on I-26 east headed to Edisto Beach SC. As @Tugly indicated in his thread from last week where his GTP38R turbo failed, I could keep the truck going up the long hills in second gear at slow speed, but there was no getting into 3rd or higher gears. Obviously the turbo is NOT working like it should with a blown boot, so using the engine alone without the turbo limits your capability to tow heavy. I maintained speed in 2nd gear until we could get off the road after the final attempt to fix it failed. I only did this for about 10 miles in order to get my family to a safe location to work on the truck. We took the Subaru you see behind the trailer to an AutoZone and I got what I needed to get us on the road and back home after the beach trip.
I learned a lot that day and now travel with a 24" 3/8" extension and a new can of brake cleaner. The boot that kept popping off was the cold side off the spider from the IC tube. This was prior to the SXE and I was running 1023 tunes on a MST which required 2800 RPM and boost at 30+ PSI. That is no longer a concern for me. Even though I had zero pop offs prior that and zero since that day, I don't tow under the same conditions any longer.
I believe that you usually get a squeal or whooosh of air after popping an intake boot.
I have never used that extreme tune before (and frankly generally drive like grandpa). I had built Way more boost than I’m accustomed to and particularly a thing I can imagine is I may have let off of the Throttle a lot abruptly. Regardless it was calling for maximum wide-open throttle to none coming up to a light kind of abruptly. That could’ve just been a really really loud back swoosh (pressure release) from the 6637 air filter I wasn’t used to?? Sure sounded like a pop but I guess I hope to never hear one now cause that one Startled me for sure..
The only reason boots blow off is oil contamination if the clamps are tight. The OE worm clamps at intake plenums will loosen up sometimes. Often sounds like a trumpet or letting the air out of a balloon while making Boost. It’s a good idea to upgrade these to t-bolt style clamps. All of the other clamps are fine if they work (not rusty or seized up).
Boots and pipes must be 100% oil free. I install them while wet with brake cleaner and never have a boot blow off the CAC pipes.
All too familiar sound from way back when. Turbo surge is unmistakable when you hear it. Mine would happen at around 14-15psi. I could either let off and lower boost or crowd the pedal and make more boost to make it stop. That was short lived. Went to the stupid (yep I’m a hater) 38R to cure it. Nowadays the riffraff billet wheel is an awesome cure.
