Brake light inop.

I have a 1966 f 100 that has an emergency flasher switch. I get power to the switch when brake is applied at one of the terminals. Is the power suppose to cross over to the other terminal at switch because it doesn't. I sure would like some advise on the power flow to the turn sig and emergency switch.

Welcome to FTE
So what is not working?
You started with brake light inop. and then ask 4 way flasher and power to 1 side when the brake is pressed.

So back to my question what is not working?
Do the turn sig. work to both sides and front & back?
Do the brake lights work?
Do the brake lights work with the turn sig. both sides and front & back?
Do the 4 ways work front & back and both sides?

The 4 ways will stop working when the brake is pressed on older cars & trucks, it does on my 81 F100.
I also want to say the turn sig. also needs to be on for the 4 ways to work on some older trucks.
I am sure guys that own this year truck will know better than I do and will speak up.

If his truck has the original emergency flasher. It was an add on and a stand alone system it worked independent from the rest of the lights and will work even if the turn signal switch is bad.

I was thinking that the flasher power in should be hot all the time since the flashers work with the key in the off position.

You can turn the emergency flasher switch into a temporary brake light switch by jumping the flasher wires and operating the switch by hand until you get the new turn signal switch in there.

I have an update of my brake light issues. I replaced the emergency light and turn signal switch. Although i bought the turn sig switch from Dennis carpenter I found that the wires were not the same wire colors as the wire diagram. I used the old switch to plan the correct way to wire it. Eventually I found the correct way and perm spliced all connections. Thank you to the reply's .

I can't say 100% on the DC switch, I know that I bought three different switches before I got a good one. From www.Shee-mar.com I recommend them. Maybe the other guys got theirs straightened out, but for a while, everyone was getting turn signal switches that the right brake light would not work. Drove some folks crazy. Me for one.

The turn signal switches today are made of plastic that won't hold it's shape. Original switches were ridged, but brittle. I fixed mine by grinding the swaged part of the pivot off and drill and tap it for a machine screw and a larger washer. This allowed me to adjust the compression on the contacts. Worked like a charm.

Those switches from Carpenter are made in china. Here is a link to a made in USA switch. I bought a made in USA switch from them for my 79 tilt column, fit perfect all the wires were the same color. And I see the prices have went down some from a year ago. https://cgfordparts.com/ufolder/ford...C9TZ-13341-USA
