Brake Light Problems
Brake Light Problems
I got all my problems with the gas tank solved but now my brake lights don't work. I have turn signals, running lights and flashers so it can't be the bulbs. I am getting power to the switch but nothing to brake lights. I tried a test wire from the positive side of the battery to the switch and still nothing. I have an easy wire harness that i put in 4 years ago and have not had any problems. I haven't replaced the switch yet because i am not convinced that is the problem. I was wondering if any one else has had a similar problem and if so how did you fix it.
Thanks
Terry

If you are getting power out to the wires from the brake switch try using a test light on the wires and at the end of the brake wire it may be the contact on the base bulb or a brake in the wires some where also check your ground wire (1st).
You mention getting power to the switch, are you getting power through the switch? Are you using the original hydraulic switch in the brake line or did you go with a mechanical switch?
The hydraulic switches fail on a consistent basis.
As Jaye stated....check your grounds

If your signal lights are working, and the stop lights used to work, then the problem has to be a bad brake light switch, wire on the outbound side of the brake light switch, or connection of that wire at you signal switch.
Your signal lights use the brake light wire and filiment to flash. So if they are working the circuit is complete back to the lights, and the grounds are good. The signals however get power from a different source when in use.
If you have power to the brake light switch, then your fuse (if you have one) and power supply is good as well.
So you simply don't have power/contenuity from the outbound side of the brake light switch up to the signal switch.
Check your connections on that line, and check for current coming out of the brake light switch when the brakes are stepped on.

Had the same problem 2 years ago
turn signal worked all 4 corners
hazard worked all for corners
I wiggled the turn signal arm on the after market type
it would worked for the brakes some times
had to replace the 7wire aftermarket turn signal assembly
everything was fine then
