7.3 - 1316 IDM Code - Dead Bank Changes Side to Side
2003 7.3 177,000 miles. Dropped a bank and loss power while idling. Got online read and researched as much as possible. Started truck and checked exhaust manifolds with a heat gun. Left side 80 right side 240. Pull valve cover off left everything looks good. Harness and gasket were replaced at 100K. Back together start it up still bad but check with heat gun now the LS is hot and the RS is cold. Checked 3-4 more times cause I think I'm loosing my mind. Pull RS Valve cover everything looks good but replace gasket, harness and glow pugs cause they are original. Fire back up same thing RS cold. Bought an IDM replaced that and truck would barely run but finally did. Checked manifolds with heat gun and LS 110 degrees and RS 240 after just a couple minutes running. The truck actually had more power and would now move but still basically junk. I ran engine with both cooler tubes off wiggled every wire and harness looking for a bad connection nothing !!!! Also this truck is a California very clean vehicle. No corrosion period. Anyone with and ideas beside the typical symptoms why power would jump from side to side ?????? TFTS !!!!!!!
What scanner are you using to pull codes? Not sure why it's jumping side to side - but maybe we can start narrowing it down. UVCH and related wiring to the 42 pin connector are suspect.
Can you run a buzz test? See what each injector sounds like - should be loud and sharp, not soft sounding. P1316 says there are codes stored in the IDM. Buzz test should pull those out for you.
Used a Snap On Solus scanner. Would not bring up any more codes. Apparently you need a Ford scanner to pull exact codes ?? UVCH is new on one side and good on the other. Connections are excellent. I'm not capable of doing a buzz test. Where is the 42 pin connector ? Thx
Thankfully, its easy and cheap to set up your phone as a scanner for these rigs. See "OBDII Tools" link in my signature for info on setting up the Forscan Lite app on your phone, and a wireless OBDII dongle to plug into your OBDII port. You can read codes, scan operating parameters, and perform tests like buzz test and others.
The 42 pin connector is above the driver's side valve cover.
So the link on the PDF for the 327 USB adapter gives you a Bluetooth adapter now instead. I would assume that I could use any Bluetooth/WiFi adapter/plug in and download the FORscan software to my phone and get the same results ???? I'm trying to scan this today and the only adapter/plug in I can get today is an Innova then I can download the FORscan to my phone for $5.99. Thoughts ??
Just make sure the adapter is compatible with the J1850 PWM protocol or it will not fully communicate with our generation of trucks. The OBDLink MX+ is highly recommended.
OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner for iPhone, Android, and Windows
Reading the FORScan home page with blue tooth you would download the FORScan Lite version for Android. But, Run test diagnostic procedures (not supported in FORScan Lite yet). Which I would assume means I would not be able to do a BUZZ test. Not that I feel I really need to cause I don't see what that would do for my as of now. Oh and the Innova adapter has terrible reviews.
I ordered the 327 USB for FORScan and the OBDLink MX. Will have em Wednesday. I was going to take it to a diesel shop tomorrow but I'm gonna wait. I did replace the IDM Fri. It was raining from then till today so did do much in the rain. Truck starts really hard and stalls. Once it starts and stays running it will actually move where it wouldn't before. Still the LS bank has 250 degrees and the RS is 90. No way would you drive it anywhere. Thanks for all the help and great INFO !!!!!!
if you can't find bad wires on the 42pin connector , I would follow it all along to see if something has rubbed through or eaten your wiring in the valley where they split and go to you VC's you obviously have a short somewhere! That would drive me nuts!
