Now thats just ridiculous.. If GM was really having trouble with one out of 2, then they wouldnt bee in business, not to mention the NHTSA would shut them down WAY before that. they would be in bankruptcy courts and all the technicians in the tranny shops would be driving Jags.

I know its a heavy Vehicle, VERY heavy, Im not expecting a sports car out of it, I feel its more of a gearing issue. Alot of the mountains in WV have sharp switchbacks where you slow down to 5 mph then take off again, it feels like it needs a gear between 2nd and drive.. The engines been great, very pleased with it.

Now, I have driven a 1500 SWB 5.3L and I will tell you these engines are gutless until they hit about 4,000rpm and then they pull pretty hard. I would never want to tow with one. They would make for a fine camaro engine but not in a truck.

You know I really didn't think to look at the 5.3 (piston rattler)Chebby engine that way until you mentioned that. One of my friends back home, her Mom had a 2000 Chevy 1500 Z71 with that motor. I had to drive her Mom to the Detroit Airport (about 3 hours from my house). That truck was a blast to drive on the highway, punch it and it pulled you back in your seat really hard! I was very impressed until it hit 95 mph and it fell on it's face! (Damn speed limiter!) It pulled hard up to 95, and that's great if you're racing somebody. I also noticed it didn't start to pull really hard until it hit around 3800-4000 rpm, like I said...fine if you're racing someone. I want my engine to build torque as soon as I hit the gas, around 1000-1500 rpm (that's why I love my 300 six). This is what leads me to believe the 5.4 liter Ford engine (especially the new 3V version) is a better pulling engine than the rattling 5.3, it makes it's best power at lower rpms. Chevy power, how does your 5.3 beat most Fords? Speed? Yeah probably, try throwing a 6000 lb trailer behind it, against a 3V 5.4 liter equipped Ford with similar gearing and so forth. Then see who pulls better! Some people insist on buying Chevrolet Trucks because that is all they have ever owned and probably all they ever will own! It's all about personal preferance, these people have learned to live with the stupid little problems that the newer Chevrolet trucks have. Same thing with Ford owners like myself, we learn to live with the little defects our trucks have. Hell they're man made they're not perfect!
I dunno ive had a 74 Chevy 3/4 ton with a 350 and a 4spd. And a 81 F150 with a 300 I-6 and a 3spd with overdrive. I mean to tell ya what dat dere 300 6 would twist that chevy transmision into a pretzel.
you know what i think of new cars is that they put tooo much junk into them to make it have more hp and stuff to make it go faster most of the problem to me is that they are to into electronics of the trucks and cars andnot enough engine
What does this "Piston slap" on these chevy's sound like, my buddy's dad has one and I don't think I've ever heard it....umm....compared to my Bronco which never made any noise besides sounding like an explosion everytime I hit a bump (top was only being held on by 2 bolts)...there now its a competition/comparison!
Those 300s definately got somethin! I blew one rearend out of my 84 with a 300 six! It's pulls everything I ever tried pulling, well dared to pull! With out breaking driveline components! I pulled two Chevys out with my lil six, one of the guys forgot take his truck out of park!
Originally posted by MW95F250 Well, considering, my grandfather's Chevy diesel has gone through 3 transmissions in 120,000 miles, I almost would agree with Mr. Cowboy.
Im not overly impressed with ford trannnies right now. You think somewhere someone hasnt went through 3 trannies in a ford in that many miles, I do, look on this board its been discussed, .
My Expy tranny lasted 44,000 miles, My Excursion now has 56,000 miles on it, and is beginning to have tranny issues also.
Im not a real Happy Camper with these POS trannies in these big trucks. And the heaviest thing I towed with Either was 2000 pounds. And not in OD.
I have to admit, one of my favorite trucks to drive for work was an old f-250 with the 300 in it.
The Ford dealer My stepdad works at, had it for their plow truck in the winter. We used it for getting forewood, and it would haul a load really good, as long as you werent in a hurry.
It was geared Very low, im not sure what rearend it had in it.
I fell all it had going for it was the gearing, I mean the HP and TQ numbers are not impressive in this vehicle, but geared right, it will pull over a tree.
i was just watching the news and i seen where 2 people are filing a class action lawsuit on gm.. for their V8's makeing a knocking sound.. and they said thousands of truck's and suv's have this problem.. gm said they realize it, and they've fixed the problem this year... i wouldnt buy one of those for Nuthin! go with the Ford!!!
