Hey all, new to the forum and looking for some advice.
I recently purchased a '89 B2 (A4LD) that was having hard shifts between 1-2. I replaced the vacuum modulator and that seems to have taken care of that issue. However, I still have a strange issue that I cannot seem to figure out.
When driving with O/D active, the transmission will slip in any gear if I floor it. Let off the gas a little and the gears catch. I do not have this problem when driving in D (O/D off). I know losing O/D is a common issue with the A4LDs, but I'm not sure why this would cause slippage when I am in the other gears.
So I just adjusted the kickdown linkage by releasing the clip on the engine side of the firewall, pulling the cable out, and then depressing the gas pedal fully. No change but worth a shot. Just to be sure I got under the car while my buddy depressed the pedal and the bracket on the side of the tranny is actuating about an inch.
Could be the overdrive one way clutch (input sprag) it can wear and slip, most of the time they just fail and you lose forward and reverse, so when OD is canceled the coast clutch is applied and that supports the one way clutch and stops the slip.
If this is the case the only thing you can do is to pull the transmission and pretty much rebuild it.

that could be it. The only thing that makes me hesitant is that I can easily get into overdrive if I apply moderate acceleration. I can also get out of OD quite easily as well. The slippage only occurs when I am at high RPM and then proceed to floor it. When I let off after a slip the transmission immediately catches again.
