AODE / transfer case grinding
I have a 1986 Bronco with an AODE transmission and what i believe is a 1345 BW transfer case. When I start it, it seems i can go into 4H the first time with no problem. I have the tranny in neutral, hubs locked and i shift from 2H through N on the transfer case and it drops into 4H with no problem. now if i transfer back to 2H and then try to go back into 4H it will grind as i try it. I have done all the basic checks like being on level ground, fully stopped, slow roll, etc but in the end it just will not go. I have to shut it off, shift into 4H and then restart it. a friend of mine said he thought it might be an issue with the solenoid pack in the transmission that might be the culprit. I was also wondering if there are some adjustments that might be the issue. I haven't had the bronco that long and I just figured out the 4x4 had issues. to top it off I am not very smart on the whole auto transmission thing! I have only dealt with the manual types so this is all new to me. I have no idea where to start!!
Thanks in advance for all the help!
The AODE didn't come out until 1992 or so, and is electronically controlled. So, you more than likely just have the AOD, which is purely mechanical.
There shouldn't be any solenoids or the like involved.
If the transmission is in neutral, it really should behave just the same as a manual transmission.
On the Bronco, you should be able to shift between 2H and 4H while driving. This is for situations like patchy ice and snow, where you intermittently need 4x4 and don't want to stop every time.
So, if it's grinding when going between 2H and 4H, that sounds like a problem with the transfer case.
Have you made sure the transfer case is properly topped off with fluid?
