Anderson Hitch?

Sorry if this has been beat up already but for some reason I can't search this site. Anyhow I am thinking of getting an Anderson Hitch but am not sure how it will work/fit with the Ford factory puck system. Can you use the outer holes for safety chains or does the hitch cover them? Any help and photos will be greatly appreciated.

The hitch covers them but Andersen states you can cut holes in the base plate to allow for their use. That is what I did when I still had mine, and it worked great. Also prevented the hitch from rotating as a nice plus. They also offer a kit to connect the chains to a plate between the hitch and the ball, but I was more comfortable having them connected to something else.

I would not cut the Andersen. If you want to fit chains, Andersen sells a chain setup that attaches to the shaft of the gooseneck. It’s a nice professional looking setup.

It looks nice, but it’s not a hot idea to attach your chains to the same point as the hitch. That’s why the goose ball kits come with separate chain anchors.

Andersen (with an "e") allows for the holes in the AUH base to make it work on the Ford puck system to use chain anchors. They cover it on their website I believe... and you can call them as well - they just have a couple of rules to follow (hole size & distance from edge). I did it and no issues using the ford anchors - just measure about 5 times before you put the hole-saw to the AUH. Also highly recommend you put a stall mat or a bed mat under the AUH, even if you have the spray-in bed liner. FWIW - I would not use the chain anchor setup that they sell which attaches to the ball mount, as it defeats the purpose of using a safety chain (it is one point of failure).

Most states do not require chains. So the chain or no chain conversation doesn’t appear to be a recognized safety matter . Taking a hole saw to the base of the AndersEn , not for me.

Not sure where you’reat but here in Illinois and neighboring Indiana it’s required because it attaches to the goose ball. I took the rig connected up ready to go and verified with the state police in both states.

Washington State and Nevada - both do not require safety chains, since my trucks were registered there. I bot a steel Andersen’s in 2013 and never been stopped for a safety chain Issue in the following years towing though out of the US.

3+ years and counting. Love it.

Mine is mounted on my bed rug. I cut wedges out of the bed rug open 3 places, the 2 puck locations and the Goose ball location. When the hitch is not in the truck I pop the wedges back in and the bedrug floor is flat again.

I did the same as Flyct for the safety chains, required in CA. Thousands of miles towing and no issues. Mine is mounted on a rubber mat from tractor supply. I retorque the top bolt after landing the trailer due to some give in the mat and finish up with the other two bolts.

Also look at the Reese GooseBox. I put it on my last and current fifth wheel, and it performs great. You get a clean truck bed, and it has an airbag built in for a nice ride. Lippert owns Reese, so it also keeps your factory warranty in check.

Lippert (LCI) does not own Reese. Reese is owned by Horizon Global which owns several towing-related brands (Reese, Draw-Tite, Bulldog, Tekonsha, etc), . LCI is a completely different company that simply has a marketing agreement with Reese to sell the Goosebox. LCI pushes the Goosebox, as they make money with every sale, but there is no warranty issue with other hitches. Having said that... I've heard nothing but good things about the Goosebox.
