Checking timing gears
I am about to take the distributor out and take off the timing gear cover to check them. My question is, if I cannot put a screwdriver into the cylinder to determine when #1 cylinder is at the top, how do I judge when to restab the distributor? Working on a '51 239.

The timing cover has a pointer on it that lines up with a bump on the crank pulley at top dead center (TDC). Pull your #1 spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole while cranking the engine. You will feel air pushing your thumb up on the compression stroke. By hand rotate the crank to line the pointer up with the pulley bump and you are at #1 TDC. If you are still running points you can then static time it and be done.

Static timing involves setting the timing with the engine off as described. Get the #1 piston to TDC, drop in the distributor so the rotor will coincide with the number one plug wire on the cap, then rotate the distributor body until the points just open. That gets you close enough to start the engine, then you can adjust while running.
