1985 Ford Ranger, 2.8,4x4,auto, recently rplaced the timing gears, disatributor, ign module, ign coil. The truck died on me and would not restart after much troubleshooting and checking and replacing parts I assumed that it had slipped the timing gears, they were fine, replaced distributor next and it now starts and idles fair. The biggest problem is that i cannot get the timing to set right, i static timed it at 0 but need to set it at 10 BTDC, when I look at the marks with a timing light the marks will not stay put they bounce back and forth... Why? ANd how can I set the timing?. Another question is after I put everything back together I get a lot of blowby from the oil cap tube... any ideas why?.
Thank Any help would be great.
Terry
as for the timing problem are you still using the stock TFI ignition system? if so then you need to disconnect the black (or grey...sorry its been a little while) plug with the single wire going to the distributor to set the timing. Disconnect the plug with the engine running then set the timing and then reconnect the plug. the computer is picking up a signal from the distributor and always attempting to get ideal timing which is why it jumps back and forth when you try and change it without disconnecting this plug.
The blowby can be caused by a number of things. It could be a clogged pcv valve or a broken piston ring, a clogged breather, im sure im leaving a lot of causes out.
When you replaced the distributor and timing gears were you sure to line everything up. It is also possible you are off a tooth on the distributor or timing gears. It is very rare that the timing gears on the 2.8 have to be replaced as there is no chain or belt.
