The truck is an 85 300 one barrel. i have the timing at 10, how much can i increase it.

You can go till you hear spark knock or is hard to start but I don't think I would go much more then you are at.
Are you still running all the feed back system or has some stuff been removed? Have you checked for vacuum leaks and if carb is loose? Air filter off grab the top of the carb and try moving it, it should not move.

Not sure how to break this to you, but are you sure it's the truck?

(Thanks for the great set-up, BTW)
I did just for you

well got the timing sorted out, now it appears to have been just the clutch slipping. i noticed when i was going up the hill in front of the house it started making a noise and barely made it up the hill. When i shifted from 1st to 2nd i could feel it slipping too.

oh well i will have a lot of stuff fixed on the old girl once i change out the clutch. i checked the firewall and didn't see no indication of cracking or giving in.

Something to consider when replacing the clutch... check your flywheel as most for the 4.9L are factory drilled to accept the standard 10" or optional 11" clutch. The 11" has substantially more friction area and costs less than $50 more for the kit. You will have to replace the mounting bolts as they are a larger diameter. Have the flywheel resurfaced and I always replace the engine's rear main grease seal as there will never be a better time.

As part of the rebuild of mine I also replaced the clutch assy. and went with the 10" because at the time I did not know the flywheel was drilled for both sizes.
If the factory gave it a 10" then it is ok with me.

Thanks Dave,

This is my first clutch job. I have the drive shaft off, the cross member removed and need some advice before i separate the transmission. My tranny has the external slave cylinder. Do i remove this before i separate the tranny.
The speed cable removed and the connector on top of the tranny remove and the gear shifter in the floor out.
Are they a good how to write up somewhere.

Thanks

I have not looked for a write up I also have not delt with a master / slave setup before so can't say.
Maybe this bump will have someone else see it and know.

Battery is charged and when i check the small wire that hooks on the solenoid i get the 12.34 the battery is showing. i think this is the 12 volts from the switch.

not sure what else to check?

Thanks

Check the starter. If you have a mallet (not a hammer) you can hit it a few times then try cranking again. Or, have someone crank it while you hit it at the same time.
