I'm trying to figure out a problem with my truck and the FORScan app was recommended by user BWST. It appears there is a $5.99 one and a free one. I'm kind of new to the whole app thing, so I was wondering if there really are two, and if so what the difference is. The app info recommended OBDLink MX+, but it's over $100 bucks. is there a cord that would be cheaper but work, instead of the Bluetooth thing? Thanks for any help I'm kind of slow technologically.
You want the version of app which costs few bucks to get access to all features.
As for dongles, fancier will secure trouble free connection, stay away from cheapest stuff!

Please excuse my ignorance, but is a dongle always wireless, or are there wired dongles? I tried to search for a wired one, but the wired ones seem to be the complete FORScan system. Does everyone just use bluetooth with the app?

Please see my post above yours...
Unless you have a USB port in your mobile device, BT or WiFi are your only options to connect.
I use both FORScan on PC and Android . Obviously not at the same time though. You can use the same adapter for both no drama , providing your laptop has Bluetooth which most do nowadays. Tip for Windows 10 laptop users, if you have connection issues with the OBD MX+ make sure you have the latest firmware on the adapter by checking the OBDlink app and click check for update. I usually do this every month just to make sure anyway.
My OBD2 adapter is an OBD MX+ which is Bluetooth. Same as what is recommended above. Hands down the best OBD adapter I have used and well worth the extra coin it costs compared to others.
The pc version lets you do some extra stuff. I feel it is also easier for diagnostics when in your drive way trying to figure out issues due to the larger screen etc. Whilst you don't need to pay for it, I did as its an awesome app which I feel is worth the money.
The mobile version is great for when your out and about or making a trip. Its cleared trouble codes for me when I have needed to and given me extra insight into whats going on compared to Torque Pro which I also use , but don't really use for diagnostics , just more for checking things driving round.
