Is there an easy fix to change this fitting to one that I can screw a FL1A onto? I have this on the '96 Explorer block.
I would like to see this. This one is the '88 Crown Vic block.
EDIT: These adapters appear to be available for $8-10.

The Vic motor uses the FL1A. The Exploder block uses a metric thread filter, I think the FL820S. The threads in the block are the same for both, so you can swap the fitting out.
From reading the 302 rebuild book/manuel, I see that they used to use the 1 1/2" hex on the FL1A adapters. Then they switched to what the Vic block has making it difficult to remove. Guess that was a better idea.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a hex on the inside for an allen wrench

FWIW: Neither the '86 motor nor the '88 motor have a provision for an allen wrench. If the fittings aren't too tight, a plumber's basin wrench might be the tool for the job.
Just use the metric filter. If you want a longer one, do a little research and there's likely a longer filter available. I use an FL299 on my 96 Van's 351, the threads are the same as the FL1A. It holds an extra half quart of oil and is longer so that I can get a filter wrench on the end to remove it. I've done the same for all my vehicles, the wife's C-Max, my new Hustler mower, I use the 299 on my 77 Comet's 331. Would like to for the 7.3 in my 99 SD F250, but that's got a big assed filter already and holds 4 gallons of oil.
The '96 explorer block had an aluminum 90 degree adapter that stuck out forward with a small filter. I had left it at the seller's figuring I had no use for it. At least some of the aftermarket adapters do have a allen key provision.
