The Canadian style full-flow filter system has a special fitting mounted in the outboard vertical drilling, that has a tube that extends down past the horizontal drilling. It intercepts the oil, that would normally go into the horizontal passage and to the bearings. It sends the oil to the filter. Oil returning from the filter comes in to the inboard vertical passage and from there into the horizontal passage, and into the engine. 3rd picture shows a similar fitting a guy used to make, it's a lot clearer picture. It accomplishes the same thing but in a different way.
