91 oil filter adapter

How does the oil filter adapter attach to the block on these engines. I have been told you need to unscrew to piece that the oil filter threads onto when attaching it to the block. The threaded piece I am referring to does not unscrew from my 73 truck block.

Right now I cannot put the oil filter on because it hits the crossmember, I have looked at a friends 96 f-350 and another 87 f-250 and they use an adapter that turns the filter straight out the front of the motor underneath the power steering pump belt.

Can I use that adapter or will I have to use an aftermarker oil filter relocation kit?

Also there is two large holes in the crossmember already, do you think it would comprimise the structural integrity of the crossmember if I enlarge one the holes to allow the oil filter to pass straight through it.

Thanks for all of your help trying to put this truck back on the road as soon as possibly. In cases you are wondering I am changing from 7.3dsl and 5 speed to 460 and a C-6

Brian

Are you sure it does not unscrew from the block my 71 block had the oil filter stud of the block face and I unscrewed it to put the 90 degree adapter on. Its a fairly big pipe thread say about a 1/2 inch pipe thread. I had to removed the oil filter stud with a pipe wrench but hey maybe they changed thinks with the 73 blocks Eric

Maybe it will I have a friend with a 429SCJ and his unscrews, becuase he wants mine, but I don't want to tear it up trying to get it out, just to find out it won't. May I could double not it with some 3/4-16 nuts, the filter is just a std. fine thread bolt isn't it?

Brian -- it was a pain in the mule, finding the adapter for Harrison when I did what you are doing. Do a search under my name and look under topics --- I believe I've saved you a lot of grief already and posted the part number for the little adapter you are looking for.

Good luck...

On my 90 4x4 F350 that piece that turns the oil filter straight forwatd is a engine coolant to oil oil cooler.

It has a short 90 degree hose to water pump and then a long hose to radiator.

To install you just use an easyout on the stock nipple and replace with the wrenchable adapter then the cooler fits over where the old filter was with a long bolt up the center.

Whole thing ain't much bigger then an oil filter and you get an engine oil cooler to boot.
