I have a 71 F-250 with 46000 original miles on a 360/C-6(?). Truck runs great but the transmission jerks into reverse too hard. It doesnt do it into forward gears at all, just reverse. The fluid is topped off and clean (I just checked it) My question is this: what could cause it and is there an adjustment that can be made to fix it or is it time to rebuild it. I deploy for Honduras in 90 days I'm hoping it will survive that long, I'll fix it when i get back if its a major deal. Thanks in advance.
Idle speed was 730 last month when I had it inspected. (which it passed even the emissions) Probably a touch high IIRC but if this was an idle speed or U-joint problem wouldnt it be going into drive as well as reverse?? Thanks for the ideas though I dont know jack about trannies.
the reverse gear is a geared lower if I recall- something like 3:1 for reverse and like 2.5:1 for first, so the extra idle speed (it is kinda high, not terribly, but acceptable) would have a bit more effect in reverse. With the Ujoints, they do some funny stuff. Check them out anyway.
Thanks for the help, I was afraid I was gonna have to get the tranny done. That would have put a damper on my "deal" I paid $300 for the truck. Its a great truck though runs great rides decent. Thanks again.
Not sure why no one else posted, they must have thought I had it all under control. Unfortunatlly, they are sadly mistaken. You do need to look at those universal joints anywho. You still might need some tranny work to get it fixed, but I say drive it till it quits (hence my signature). I dont think that you have that much to worry about. It doesnt throw you out of your seat or anything does it??
Nah, most days it clunks some but nothing totally insane. Im sure youre right I'll just drive it till I leave for Hondo and see about fixing it when I get back. If the weathewr is any better today I'll check the U joints. It was rainy and cold sunday. Thanks
