The horn ring on my '69 F100 has popped out of the cradle on the
steering wheel.......Is there anyway to get the horn ring off the steering wheel to replace the horn button...........
Now that the horn ring is out of the cradle...the horn will not even make a noise now...........I can move the ring itself back into the cradle and push down (w/ some pressure) and the horn will sound......
But i just need to know how to get the horn ring out......so i can replace the horn button if need be....and to get it back in the cradle on the steering wheel
There is a plastic ring screwed to the back of the horn ring that has 3 tabs on it. The tabs fit into slots and then twist into place, locking the horn ring into the wheel. The plastic ring is called a "horn index" or "retainer" and they are on ebay all the time. I think you can also get them from most of the catalogs mentioned all the time here, you might even try your friendly neighborhood Ford dealership.
If I cannot get the ring to twist (counter-clockwise, IIRC), I just pry the ring off, which breaks the tabs, and then replace the retainer.
