We put a one wire alternator on a 1956 F350 express; I know exactly how this
light works with a generator. I tried all my tricks with no luck with alternator. My
research comes up with some kind of monitor to sense voltage like if voltage
drops under 12vts the light comes on and goes off over 12vts (charging) is this
true and who sells them. Or I just may go with oil and amp gauges? Any one have
any luck with this? sam

You can't get there from here because you don't have access to the sense circuit (see diagram).
If you have a power outlet (aka cigarette lighter), one of these works quite well.
Also bear in mind that if your alternator is rated over 60 amps you will need an externally shunted ammeter, that is if you go the ammeter route instead of a voltmeter.
