gen light

this is probably a stupid question but what is the easiest way to get the gen light to stay off after an alternator conversion. or can you hook up to tell when alt is not working properly

If you converted to a standard Delco Alternator, you can use the light by connecting a wire from the light to a 12 volt source that is switched by the ignition "On" switch. The other side of the light goes to the terminal next to the "field" terminal on the alternator. That terminal has 12 volts on it when the alternator is charging. Since that would make 12 volts on both terminals of the light, it won't burn, indicating a charging system. If the alternator stops charging, the terminal goes to ground, completeing the circuit for the light, indicating a system that isn't charging. Simple but effective.

I'll have to file that one away in case I make the switch from GEN to ALT. Thanks for the tip!

I did exactly that on my truck. I used a Delco 3-wire hookup and a voltmeter instead of an Ammeter in my dash so I wanted an additional flag in case the alternator stopped working. For some reason I just don't seem to pay as much attention to a voltmeter as an Ammeter. I picked up a red indicator light at my local parts house and installed it the dash where the choke used to be. It works great...
