So I’ve owned the truck a year. 2002 7.3 4x4. Truck starts and idles smooth. All stock, automatic tranny. Maintained properly, is due for a transmission service which I will be doing this weekend. My issues is when going up a steep hill. If I’m in fourth and have to slow down because of cars in front of me then have to pick up speed while on a hill going up, the truck takes a long time to downshift and get power. It makes the sound as if you were driving a stick and had it in too high of a gear. I have to floor it to get it to drop into third and get power. Any suggestions on where to start? Fuel filter is new, no check engine light, very low original miles. Only 60,000 on the clock
Start with reading codes. Forscan (available free at www.forscan.org) is a great way to do it. You will also need an ELM327 adapter available at Amazon for about $30. Or you could take it to a good independent shop or a Ford dealer. The places that read codes free CANNOT read the codes you need.
Once we know the codes we can suggest places to start. Without the codes, all I can tell you is to replace the bad part that is causing the problem.
You have an engine performance problem and the most common cause is low boost pressure. The EBP sensor tubing can rust out and cause pressure loss. My high school chum (who worked for our local Ford dealer since 1985) and who now owns his own Ford Truck Specialty Shop, also suggests you check supply fuel pressure and volume. He has seen in-tank screen filters clogged with algae.
OP - We shouldn't jump to any conclusions as to engine performance vice transmission issues (it could well be the latter and it could simply be a case of housekeeping on the trans fluid). The 7.3L is not particularly well instrumented so many problems (e.g. no start) typically come without accompanying DTCs. If you'd like to check PIDs, here's some openers on engine performance:
Have you checked the transmission fluid level...engine warm on level ground...as that will not throw a code and could very well contribute to your issue?
