Upper oil pan restrictor

So is this oil pan restrictor or check valve definitely not serviceable?

I have high oil temps on flat ground now and think this may be the issue.

12k at 65mph. Flat ground my oils around 220, and the slighest hill I hit 248*.

ive noticed without the trailer driving 75mph differences in oil temperature on my commute to work of about 15*. Wondering if maybe that piece is flipping up and blocking my cooler from time to time

I would start with a check of all coolant levels, there are two systems.

I would also then check the clutch fan and its operation. When you are hitting that higher temps does the clutch fan engage on high and sound like an airplane?

Finally the oil cooler is off of the oil pan. So if it is restricted you can work on it.

Coolant levels are in check, I made sure after chasing down an intercooler leak a few months ago.

Fan clutch is definitely working, I’ve tested it with the computer and I can hear it come on. When it comes on, oil temp does not drop very fast at all. The spread from oil to coolant has gotten as high has 30*.

I suppose a new oil cooler would be easier than going the full pan route. I saw in another post a guy took his cooler off and saw the restrictor or freeze plug right there in the port.

the spread has nothing to do with it. They are not like the 6.0 or 6.4 where the delta matters.

I would look at the cooler itself. As I call you can remove the oil pan and then service/replace the cooler.

Thanks, I’ll try that an report back. Should I go with the BPD cooler or stay stock?

the stock cooler has been fine. There have been very few if any issues. I can think of only one other that had an issue.

The spread isn't gospel to follow like on a 6.0 where you'll blow an EGR cooler if you don't keep it in check, but a 30 degree delta still implies an oil cooling issue of some sort. Most likely the oil cooler itself is plugging up. Not as big of a deal as a 6.0, but the delta he reported is important info to relay.

oil temps sounds normal to me. The only time i would worry if the oil temps goes above 248 and never comes back down after topping the incline.

That's like mine also. I tow a 34'er and I have seen those temps on hot days. That is the main reason I use full synthetic oil

Just FYI if you happen to need a new oil cooler and have to R&R. Bullet Proof Diesel's upgraded OEM style oil cooler:
