I have a 351M that has a severe oil leak to the point i wnat to change the pan along with the gasket. My problem is cant find a oil pan every junkyard I call they dont have one Can I use a cleveland oil pan in its place please help oil is all over the motor
Oil all over the motor is not just coming from the oil pan. Most leaks from the oil pan cause oil to appear on items below the oil pan (gravity, and all that).
I'd suggest you start at the top and work your way down.
The most likely sources of oil all over the motor are the valve cover gaskets. I would replace those first, then give the engine a good degreasing and see where it shows up next.
Ford used two different oil pan types on M-block (351M/400) engines, depending on the vehicle.
All '71-'79 cars and '77-'79 4x2 trucks used a front-sump oil pan that is interchangeable with the 351C oil pan.
'77-'79 4x4 trucks, all '80-'82 trucks (4x2 and 4x4), and all '77-'82 vans used a rear-sump oil pan that was unique to the M-block. Rear-sump oil pans were not used with the 351C (but they will bolt onto the block).
