Due to other circumstances my 96 F350 PSD has sat for 5 years. Only has 175,000 miles on it. I am now in the process of rebuilding it. It had some obvious leaks in the valley When parked so I’m in the process of fixing all of that. However I don’t own an engine hoist or stand so I don’t have a way to pull the engine and clean out the old oil in the pan. How worried should I be about sludge in the pan? I don’t want to start it and plug up the engine. Any advice is appreciated.
Why not just dump the existing oil, change the filter, and add fresh oil? If there is any sludge, will likely see it when dumping the existing oil.
Toward collecting any sludge, am interpreting this as coming from water that may have crept inside the block while it sat for those 5 years. Unless I am missing something, if the hood was closed the filler cap was in place, and all the intake plumbing was connected all that time, there was not much opportunity for any notable amount of condensation to happen.
If super worried about contamination, consider an AMSOIL dual remote filter setup as part of the rebuild.
And at the risk of insulting, don't overlook refreshing the HPOP reservoir's oil.
Am sure that better experts will correct me as appropriate.
