oil pan removal

Hello,
Picked up my first F150 truck yesterday. Runs great, rides nice.
I have one small problem though. I have a rust spot in the oil pan that is leaking oil. I am going to try to patch it but may have to change the pan itself. Can the oil pan be removed without having to pull the engine out?

Any help would be appreciated seeing as how I want this truck to last awhile.

Thanks,

Mattb650

LAST EDITED ON 11-May-01 AT 12:12 PM (EST)[p]Hi Matt, if there is room to remove the oil pan then most likely not. You may need to jack up the engine some to gain more room. check your shop manual for specifics...

You don't have to pull the engine, but you do have to jack it up to get the pan out. Make sure you buy a new pan, they are heavier and more corrosion resistant, also make sure you get a new style gasket for it, as the old originals were too soft and tended to blow out from pcv backpressure, you'll probably find yours is either blown out or close to it. It's a good, full afternoons work so you don't want to have to do it twice. Good luck.

Thanks for advice.
Tried jacking up the engine as far as it would go short of breaking things and pan still wouldn't come out. It is hitting
on the tranmission housing (by about 3/8"). Tried turning crank by hand with no result.
As far as I can see, I am left with two options.
1-undo the transmission and slide it back out of the way
2-pull the engine completely.

On the second point, how easy is to pull the engine. Would you suggest pulling the engine and tranmission together or just the engine?

Any help would be appreciated seeing as this is my first experience with the inline sixers.

Thanks

I had my oil pan done. It wasn't leaking yet, but was pretty rusted. My mechanic had the tranny out for a clutch so we figured to get the pan done because with the tranny out it is pretty easy. I would think pulling the motor would be way more work than pulling the tranny, and, if you pull the tranny, might as well do the clutch unless it is it very good shape.
