Afternoon all,
So.. my 77 F150/4x4/SB/351M/4sp PS pump was leaking, slowly getting worse, got reman from NAPA, pressed pully on, installed, bled/purge, a little noise, not much. Don't drive it too much, went up snow wheeling, on way down, pump gets noisy, steering goes to crap, twitchy, not returning to center, NOISY, fluid was full, had to drive down, got stuck a few times, still steered, but not fun.
Sooo, got new/new pump, wash, rinse, repeat now it still steers... funky, does not return to center, turns easy then hard, I have bled it to death.
Could the pump going bad have caused my steering gearbox to go bad? Or is there just air caught in it somewhere? Help, not sure what else to do.
Steering was great beforehand, just leaky and marked his spot everywhere. It is the old one, with metal reservoir.
Depends on what went wrong with the pump.
Sounds to me like something let go in the pump and trash (metal debris) got pumped into the steering box. This could cause the spool valve in the steering box to hang up and cause "glitchy" steering.
The fluid was clean when I took it out after it failed, no metal flakes or discoloration either time.
To bleed, I jacked the front end up, turns wheels L - R four to five X, been doing it that way since a kid.
No joints seized, I've had those before, different feel... what do the Redhead units run? Not sure if I'm ready to drop the $ for that yet, but curious..
Sometimes it take more than 5 turn cycles but it sounds likely that's not your problem. I toasted a Saginaw pump once because it had air in it, and it happened fast.
If it's your box Redhead is the only way to go. they run from $250-$450 I'm not sure what yours cost but it's on their website. great folks that do a great job and it's all done in the USA.
