1969 Power Steering Issues

Hello FTE!

Can I bypass my power steering without hurting anything?

While waiting for my PS hoses, I ran my PS pump dry and now that everyting is hooked up, the Pump whines loud and everything is really hot.

The powersteering works good, but the pump and hoses are really hot and it whines fairly loudly at increased rpms.

I'm reluctant to bypass it, because when it wasn't working my steering was really unpredictable. I tightened up the steering box nut a half a turn and that seemed to help a lot, but I'm wondering if no PS Pump will affect the steering?

Will no PS Pump make my steering loose or should it be ok? I was also thinking that maybe I have the wrong type of fluid? I added a 3rd party PS fluid.

This most likely a temp solution until I can afford a new PS Pump.

Thanks for your help!

again you can drive it with out power steering with out damaging the unit i would take the belt off of the power steering pump if it is dry however be careful the old trucks are heavy and there is a reason they came with power steering and no disconnecting the power from the steering is not the same a a manual steering box they are geared to be gear assisted.
Thanks for your help!

Two totally different P/S systems were used in 1969.

Before serial number D96,001 = Bendix.

From serial number D96,001 = Ford.

The P/S hoses used w/Bendix P/S are different w/Ford P/S, as is the P/S pump.

The serial number is the last 6 digits of the VIN.
