Changing the oil today, going to get some T6 5w40. Walmart currently has 2.5gal on clearance for $40 right now. Trying the switch from 15w40, just hit 200k miles. I was going to just use the OEM filter again but I found this AFE filter not too far from me for less.:
Thanks for the quick response. Also, I haven't used Archoil yet but is it really necessary? Especially with synthetic or is it just a preference/preventative thing?
OEM only for the filters!!!!!!!!! The filter in the link will not even fit a 6.0 if that is what you have. Archoil is a good product, I use it every other oil change as a preventative matter for my 6.0.
I only use the Ford Part #: 3C3Z-6731-AA / Motorcraft FL-2016 oil filter. I recommend a full synthetic 5W-40 oil that meets Ford spec WSS-M2C171-F1. Personally am running the Motorcraft, XO-5W40-5Q3SD, full synthetic diesel motor oil . I used to run 15W-40 non-synthetic and had intermittent "stiction" issues, the usual additives helped, but switching to 5W-40 full synthetic was the cure and I have not used or needed any additives after the switch. Several folks have reported favorable results with TRIAX FLEET SUPREME ESP 5W-40 Full Synthetic and I may give it a try, but I am very satisfied with the Motorcraft oil and dont see what could be "improved". As a rule I avoid looking for the lowest price product. Most things I own I consider to costly to service them with cheep oil, parts etc., instead I find the best quality product or part and only then see who has the most competitive price. Another way of putting it is that the bitterness of low quality lasts for a long time, but the sweetness of a low price is very short. Good Luck, Russ
Just my personal experience, I have used a K&N stainless steel reusable filter for the past 100K miles and have had no issues. My 2004 X currently has 150K miles on the clock. I flush it every 3K miles with gas and only see normal wear particles. I also use a 20W-50 synthetic oil that I change every 10K miles. I‘m fairly sure most 6.0 owners never inspect there filters. They just throw them away. OBTW, I normally get grief for discussing the K&N filter but the beauty is I can check it everyday if I want to and it does not cost me $25 a pop. Just food for thought.
Ed - you said you see only normal wear particles. I don't follow that - what would be the source of visible (but normal) wear particles?
Mark, I flush the filter In a small black plastic drain pan using gas. K&N recommends no carburetor cleaners. After the flush is complete, I let the oil settle out until the gas is clear. I take a LED light and shine into the pan. I see very, very small particles (smaller then glitter) looking back at me, all the same size. At first I was concerned, but then realized that is normal engine wear and using this filter is a way to see it up close and personal.
I’m not sure you can see the metal wear particles in a paper oil filter as they probably embed in the material. I have never taken one apart. The next time you change your oil filter wash the filter in gas and let it dry. Take a light and see if there are any shiny particles looking back at you from the flush pan or on the filter material. I suspect there will be.
In my 6.0, I use Royal Purple 20W-50 or RP Duralec 15W-40 synthetic oil plus I add a quart of AR9100 each 10K mile oil change.
I also use the same K&N oil filter, RP 0W-40 XPR oil and AR9100 in my C6 ZR1 Corvette and my Dodge Hellcat Charger with the same results.
