Air intake
I have read there is a value to the engine to increase air flow above the Factory equip. Problem is living in Calif, makes it difficult to find after market equipment that achieves the desired Goal and meets Calif emission standards.
- Is there a good reason to change the factory equipment to after market cold Air intake systems
- I have found a fit S&B cat # 75-2503 for 7.5L/460 V8, according to the manufacturer this is a direct fit to my vehicle. Has anyone used this equipment with any success or is it a waste of money?
No. Those so-called "cold air" systems take in hotter air than your factory setup. You should just cut off the air horns in the center section between the air box and the throttle body. Those are meant to cut the air intake noise but do restrict air flow.
Be forewarned that any modifications you do must be California Air Resources Board (CARB) complaint and any accessory being considered must have an Executive Order number in order to pass your next Star Smog inspection. Best advise, leave in stock configuration.
The air intake tube for the 460 that goes into the grill is in fact better than any after market set up. Not sure if your truck has a MAF sensor, but if it does, the after-market air induction systems make your MAF sensor have a short life span. Seen guys switch back to their OEM configuration and now are selling their after-market set up.
I did a write up on this a while back on another diesel forum. I did a lot of research on cold air intake and filter systems years ago, I was just getting into off road racing.
A lot of factory systems are cold air intakes, and the replacement or mod cold air intake, is not. I don’t know how they get away with it. Long story short, a lot of them advertise increased horsepower, which is true. But they do it through less filtration. Some of them, a lot less.
A wealthy engineer somewhere in the states years ago decided to look into it. He hired an engineering firm to test all the aftermarket intake systems and filters, and all of the top auto manufacturers. Top of the list was ac Delco and ford, the after market systems all came in last.
Because I'm in Calif., i am seriously hesitant to do any modifications to the emissions systems. Truck runs fine without modifications. But your' input has been most enlightening Kris
I had the KN FIPK on my previous truck years ago and it didn't run as good and it didn't even seal up at the throttle body very well.
Save your money for something better.
