I have a CAI(K&N) and I was thinking of fabricating a ram intake to get more cold air into the system. I have been wondering if here are any special consideration e.g. air flow sensor and recalibration? What would happen if I added just the ram portion and did not make any other changes. I am thinking of fabricating fiberglass intake scoupes and mounting them either behind the grill or under the front fender. Any comments of experiences with forced air systems? Design considerations?
Just don't do anything you can't put back. I have a Volant cold air intake. I ordered it when my 04 was very new. I guess Volant had just designed the system for the new body style and engine, because I ordered the intake and the ram air option. Apparently it was causing a lot of problems. It took about 4 months for them to get it to me, because they were trying to replace all the first type they sold. So I eventually got the cold air intake but they told me the ram air was unavailable. At this point 3 1/2 years later it is available. If a multi million dollar co. had that much trouble. More power to you if you can do it.

Ever have the problem of snow getting forced in the opening during the winter?
I have a Ram Air setup on my '72 390. The first thing I noticed is that I could jump up a couple of sizes on jets. (More air, more gas). On the highway I can feel the dif if I jump on it. Dont know about trucks with all the whiz bang mystery boxes. I have CAI on my '05, and other than more noise, not sure about perf, although I think between that and the Mag muffler, my mileage jumped (squeezed) about 1 more mpg.
I made my own ram air out of a dryer duct, a home ac vent, duck tape and zip ties. I don't show it to many people because it screams red neck. Don't know if it makes a different but I can say I have ram air. It does get more cold air to the K/N filter. It runs from the center across the front and behind the drivers side head light. It looks pretty getto. I'm glad it is not visible.
