I was driving and pulling a hill pushed the tow haul button and the gauges on the instrument all dropped to zero. All the lights still working just the gauges and the light for the tow haul were out but no other problems. We were about 2hrs from home about an 1.5hr in to the trip the radio went off then everything started shutting down the battery was dying. I feel like it’s an alternator issue just not sure why the instrument cluster would die like that. I checked fuses and couldn’t find an that were blown. I’m hoping it’s just an alternator. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Welcome to the EX forum Keith!
I haven't had any issues such as you are having but just to be clear the V-10 Excursion never came equipped with the Tow/Haul transmission function. The 4R100 trans behind the 2 valve 6.8 only has the OD Off button on the shifter, very different from the Tow/Haul feature of later transmissions.
Since your electrical issues started with a push of that OD Off button would make me think it could possibly be an issue with the wiring harness that includes that circuit in the steering column. There have been several reports of other s electrical problems due to chaffed and exposed wires in that harness. Pull the plastic steering column cover and start closely inspecting the wiring harness and be sure to check it all even if you find a suspect area quickly there may be more.
Good luck and be sure to report back your findings.
I’ve changed the alternator because it wasn’t charging. Is there an in-line fuse that could have blown that would cause the alternator to stop charging?

I don't think so. I would lean towards no, since you replaced the alternator and it is charging, if there was a blown fuse that affected that it would not be charging.
Ended up being one of the ignition fuses. So got a new alternator and serpentine belt out of it but was a fuse of course one of the only fuses I didn’t check
