Tick tick tick

Is there 6.2 engines that don’t tick? Are tickers a minority or majority? I’ve heard ford brushed this off as not a issue/problem.

I’m a ford guy, raised that way, I’m 50 now! I love F series trucks. But, why does my sweet, well maintained Superduty have to tick every other time I fire it up?

Because it knows that it “ticks” you off......(ha ha)

My 2011 6.2l seemed to tick more early on (purchased new in 2010). I haven’t noticed any ticking for awhile though (around 104,000 miles on it)

Are you running 5/20 or 5/30 oil?

My 2016 with 29,000 ticks on start up about 30% of the time, drives me nuts. I came out of a 2008 F150 with cam phaser noise that would turn heads. I was so looking forward to buying a quiet Ford. No suck luck. My 2018 Flex ticks after it gets warm about 50% of the time. Come on Ford, Do better.

Mine was ticking a bit at startup...since I've changed the oil, it's been quiet.

For the record, I used Pennzoil platinum 5W-20 synthetic.

Mine does not tick. Or maybe I'm just harder of hearing in my old age. Ticking can be the fuel injection. I wouldn't worry about it. But, it can be annoying.

I had a ticker until recently. Took it in for some other work to be done and mentioned the cold start tapping. They found the lifters on the tip of 2 of the rocker arms had collapsed. Startups are much quieter now.

Definitely not the injectors. It's hard for me to explain the sound. About 30% of the time, mine makes a knocking/ticking sound on startup....kinda similar to a lifter that takes a while to pump up. And 100% of the time, while idling when warm, there is a grinding/groaning sound in a rhythm. Kinda like the rhythm of a squeaky belt that squeaks with every revolution of the engine...but this sounds internal. It's flat out embarrassing in a drive-thru with the sound echoing off the building...

I kinda hope it grenades itself before warranty is up so I can try my luck with a new engine.

My 2013 would tick occasionally on a cold start and last for a few seconds but I never had any issues from it in the 75k I put on the truck.

My 2019 makes nosies also but they are more concerned. About 3-4 times in the 10000 miles I've put on the truck (I bought the truck new) it will have a slight knock on a cold start that lasts until the engine is at operating temp. It doesn't happen enough or with any kind of pattern to even attempt to take it in so I'm just going to not worry about it.

Add to the list the extended cold start that it has every once in awhile and I'm thinking the newer 6.2s aren't quite the motor the old ones were.

A few years back, I had to take my ford vehicles in for an oil change at Jiffy Lube..(usually do my own oil changes). Right away, I noticed the "cold start tick" on both vehicles.. I blamed it on their cheap brand of oil filters.. something to do with a back drain problem of the oil over night.. What brand of oil filter are you using ? No tick on start up with my 2015 6.2L.. (mobil1 with Fram filter)

Well...it's YOUR truck, but I would never use a FRAM oil filter.
If you're going to use top-shelf oil, your best bet is to pair it up with a top-grade filter. Mobil, K&N, WIX, even NAPA make really good filters.
This is but one of many videos showing the different construction techniques of the various brands...standard FRAM filters are pretty much the worst you can buy.
