I have a '67 f100 with manual steering and a 3 on the tree. I want to put a C6 in it, and I would like to retain column shift for the automatic. I can get a steering column out of a '73 or '74 f100 with column shift automatic and power steering. I'm wondering whether, despite the trucks being of different generations and one having power steering, would the column out of the later truck work in my '67? It would probably be easier to just put a floor shifter in the thing with a really long lever, but I don't want to do it that way.
The column lengths are going to be different, hence the attachment is going to require some ironsmithing and you may find the new column will require you to use the later smaller diameter steering wheel. Perhaps the best solution is to get a bumpside automatic column and go through it mechanically, lubricate it, and get the job done and looking right. As a plus, you could perhaps land a power steering column which would enable you to more readily add power steering if you desire to do so. There are plenty of people with extra automatic columns for sale, so you should be able to find one pretty easily.
I could use another bumpside 3spd column for a spare. Let me know if you decide to get rid of it, please!
I'm not sure where you're located, but I have a spare auto/power steering column and power steering box that I took out of a 78 parts truck.
PM me if interested.
I appreciate the offer but I don't want to convert to power steering. Also, I don't know if a column from a '78 would work without modification in a '67.
No problem. I feel the same way. I'm happy with manual steering in my '68. Also, my '68 is a 3-speed so this column is a no-go for me on both counts.
I ended up with it because I was trying to save the parts that I could before selling the '78 shell (the guy just wanted it for the cab).
