All of the wiring is shot on my 8BA so I plan to switch to 12 V negative ground. If I get new cables and starter relay, will the starter work correctly if I wire it up and give it a shot or will I need to get a 12 v starter?
A 6V starter will work. It will spin faster. But it will also wear out faster. I don't know how long it will last using 12V
When I was building my truck, I didn't have a 6V battery handy. So, I used a 12V battery on my starter without issue. Now that starter did finally die, but I don't know how much impact the 12 volts had on it. I think the starter was original to my truck. Or at least 30-40 years old when it died.
Using 12v on a 6v starter mostly affects the Bendix drive, it really slams into the ring gear. Other than that, life of the starter depends how long you crank to get the engine started. If long crank times are required, you'll need a new starter sooner.

This is what a 6 volt positive ground starter motor sounds like after a 12 volt negative ground conversion (just the first 15 seconds).
I bought a 53 M100 that had been converted to 12 V that it starts with with 2-3 spins. It locked up on my a couple of yrs ago and the started drive was in poor shape. It`s seldom driven so I`m ok with it.
Rewired my truck and converted it to 12V neg ground. Was told the 6v starter would work and nothing needed to be done. Haven't had an issue yet. Starts right up even on the coldest days.
